Workington Lifeboat


"First established in 1886"

Temporarily closed in 1905 for re-siting but the station didn't open again until 1948 when it was re-established to increase the protection of the shipping in the Solway firth.

The Tyne class lifeboat "Sir John Fisher" was placed in service on the 8th June 1992, and is housed in a newly constructed boathouse.

An ancient market and industrial town at the mouth of the River Derwent. Some parts of the town north of the river date back to roman times but it was in the 18th century, with the exploitation of the local iron ore and coal, that Workington expanded to become a major industrial town and port.
