Heron Theatre



"The theatre in the country"


The Heron is a small theatre housed in a listed building originally one of the old two-room Grammar schools of the 18th century.

The attractive heron sculpture is the work of local artist, Paul Woodmass and the theatre was officially opened by H.R.H Princess Alexandra in July 2001.

The theatre runs a regular fortnightly programme of plays, revues, lectures and musical events which are open to the public.

Heron Corn Mill & Museum of Papermaking



"On the banks of the River Bela in South Cumbria close to the Lancashire border, this mill is one of the few still working in the area"

The present mill building dates from 1740's, and all the internal machinery is powered by a 14 ft diameter high breast shot water wheel. Some of the machinery dates from the mid nineteenth century. This includes the main shaft, pit wheel and wallower.

In the Mill, the milling process is explained and demonstrated. Cereal products are on sale, as well as small gifts, including sheets of hand made paper made in the Museum.
