Cartmel Priory

"One of the North's finest ecclesiastical buildings"

The village of Cartmel, grew up around this twelfth century Priory church which, according to legend, was built between two parallel streams in response to a ’heavenly voice’.

It survives as the centre of village life, and is a place of worship, a concert venue and a visitor attraction.

CARTMEL

Cartmel Races

"Small Racecourse of the Year in the North"

Racing at Cartmel dates back to 1856, but it is almost certain that racing has taken place here since at least the middle of the fifteenth century when monks of the nearby priory entertained themselves by organising racing on mules.

With its rich history and location on the Holker Estate, Cartmel offers a sense of uniqueness and charm unrivalled on the racing circuit. Such qualities ensure that visitors return year on year and have given the racecourse attendances to match the much larger venues.

Cavendish Arms

Cavendish Arms, Cartmel

"Any customer who walks through the doors will never leave as a customer but as a friend"

This 450-year old coaching inn the oldest in the village and built within the village walls.

It was one of the coaching stops and you can still see a mounting block dated 1837 outside the main door. Its age can sometimes be measured, although painfully, by the low beams and uneven floors.
