A wonderful church and small chapter house grace this ruined abbey
of red sandstone in a secluded valley.
Furness Abbey was founded in 1123 by Stephen, Count of Blois,
later King Stephen. The abbey was originally in the hands of the
Savigny order of monks, but was later taken over by the Cistercian
order.
